Description

In Tokaido, each player embarks on a journey along the "East Sea Road," one of Japan's most scenic and historic routes. As you travel, you’ll encounter various people, enjoy exquisite meals, collect beautiful items, discover stunning vistas, and visit temples and natural wonders. At the end of the day, when everyone has reached the end of the road, the goal is to be the most experienced traveler by having explored the most diverse and interesting aspects of the journey.

The action spaces in Tokaido are laid out on a linear track, with players advancing along it to take actions. The player who is currently furthest behind on the track gets to take their turn by moving forward to their desired action space and performing that action. This creates a strategic balance where players must decide whether to travel slowly to gain more turns or rush ahead to beat others to key action spaces.

The action spaces provide a variety of activities that score points in different but generally balanced ways. Some spaces let players earn money, while others allow them to spend money to acquire points. There are spaces dedicated to set collection, where players score points for completing specific sets, and others offer instant points or random actions from a pool of options.

All of Tokaido's actions are simple to understand, and with its calming visual design, the game offers a tranquil, zen-like experience that encourages peaceful and reflective gameplay.

Note:  This is the Stonemaier version of Tokaido due for release in the first half of 2025. It’s completely compatible with existing expansions, and it features these updates:

  • This version includes an Automa solo mode, expanding the player count to 1-5 players. The solo mode will be available both in our version and separately (for those who already own Tokaido).
  • This version is manufactured by Panda using our standards for component quality (e.g., the panorama cards will be upgraded to the same 310gsm cardstock we use for all our cards). For any components that need to integrate with existing Tokaido expansions, we’re matching the composition for full compatibility.
  • This version includes a revised rulebook for clarity and accessibility (the gameplay is the same).
  • This version includes text on some cards and the character tiles to accompany the icons (so you don’t need to reference the rulebook to decipher combinations of icons).
  • This version includes reference cards for each player that explain the locations.
  • We’re just making 1 version of Tokaido, not a standard and a deluxe version.
